SSL certificate options available
GlobalSign offer three SSL certificates; DomainSSL, OrganizationSSL and ExtendedSSL (EV). Each of these certificates is available in the Standard option and may be offered with the Wildcard and the Public IP address option.
The SANs option may then be added to any Standard, Wildcard or Public IP address certificate.
For example, say you choose the OrganizationSSL certificate, you may also choose to add the Public IP option, and then also add the SANs option to secure additional Public IP addresses. Alternatively, you may choose the OrganizationSSL certificate with the Wildcard option and then add the SANs option to secure additional Fully Qualified Domain Names (FQDNs).
Below is a table of the three main certificate types, and the SANs option, providing further details and usage examples.
| Description | Example Usage | |
|---|---|---|
| Standard SSL | Secures a single Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) | www.example.com |
| Wildcard SSL | Issued to *.example.com to secure unlimited subdomains | www.example.com secure.example.com anything.example.com |
| Public IP Address SSL | Secures a single public IP address. | https://123.456.78.90 |
| SANs Multi-Domain SSL | Allows Unified Communications support and up to 40 FQDNs, subdomains, IP addresses or localhosts | www.example.com secure.example.com sub.sub.example.com 192.168.2.0 172.30.1.1 server1 |
Free SGC SSL security & strong 256 bit SSL
All GlobalSign's SSL certificates include free SGC encryption enabling technology to "step up" older browsers using a weaker 40 bit encryption, ensuring 128 bit and 256 bit SSL encryption for every visitor. Often SGC technology is an addon service and a premium price is often charged for this service. Every GlobalSign SSL certificate is capable of 256 bit strong SSL, and the SGC technology is provided free of charge.
3 for 1 server license SSL certificate
Typically, every Certification Authority issues certificates which are licensed for installation on just one physical server. If you need to install your certificate on multiple servers, you would therefore need to purchase an additional license per server at a premium cost.
Every GlobalSign SSL certificate is provided with 3 for 1 server licenses. This effectively means you can install your certificate on 2 additional servers free of charge. This allows you to easily secure, for example, your live server, a backup server and a development server.
Additional licenses are also 3 for 1, enabling a block of 3 licenses to be purchased for the price of one.
Wildcard SSL certificate
Typically, a standard SSL certificate is issued to a single FQDN, which may be a single subdomain. This means it will only secure the exact FQDN to which it has been issued. Securing multiple subdomains by this method can become fairly expensive very quickly. To save time and money, we can offer the Wildcard option (except with EV certificates). With this option, a certificate is issued to *.example.com, where the * replaces a "fixed" sub-domain with a "variable" one. This certificate will then secure any subdomain (on the same level), including www. but not https://example.com (non www.). This non www. restriction applies to all wildcard certificates available.
Secure websites with and without www using only one SSL certificate
Typically, a standard SSL certificate is issued to a single FQDN, therefore a certificate issued to https://www.example.com will not secure https://example.com (without generating browser security warnings). The security warnings generated when visitors enter the wrong URL can encourage them to go elsewhere, resulting in lost revenue. Securing the www. and non www. would therefore normally require two separate SSL certificates, costing twice the price.
GlobalSign SSL certificates are the only professional level SSL certificates to automatically secure both the www. and non www. versions of your domain in a single SSL certificate without any additional charges, IP address purchase or server configuration.
To enable this feature you should purchase your SSL certificate (and generate your CSR) for the www. version of your domain name.
Public IP SSL certificate
Typically, a standard SSL certificate is issued to a single FQDN, such as www.example.com. However, there are situations where you may need a SSL certificate issued to a public IP address.
The Public IP Address option allows you to specify a public IP address in the common name in your CSR. The issued certificate can then be used to secure connections directly with the IP address, for example https://123.456.78.90
Please note: Only public IP addresses may be used (although the SANs option will allow local IP addresses). You must be the owner of the IP address as per records held at RIPE. Make sure you create a CSR with a common name of your IP address, for example 123.456.78.90
SSL certificate secure siteseal
The GlobalSign siteseal is a sign of trust on the Internet. It shows your visitors you have been authenticated and you use the strongest SSL possible to secure your transactions. Displaying the GlobalSign siteseal will help visitors trust your website, and in turn help to convert general visitors into paying customers.
